Russell Library, June 11 - Amy Gallatin & Stillwaters

On Thursday, June 11, from 7-8:30pm in the Hubbard Room at Russell Library, 123 Broad Street, join us for a performance by Amy Gallatin & Stillwaters.

The powerhouse duo of Amy Gallatin and renowned resophonic guitarist Roger Williams—20 and 40 year veterans of the New England music scene--joined forces a few years ago to explore their mutual love of country standards, served up with an acoustic treatment in the bluegrass vein.  The result is a toe-tapping blend of heartfelt vocals, soaring harmonies and red-hot picking, traditional yet modern and distinct.  Americana radio host Ed McKeon says: "Amy's vocals, with the power and tone of her voice, are tempered by Roger's baritone which has been sanded smooth by cigarettes and, shall we say, maturity. The song selections are perfect, the harmonies glorious, the sentiments wonderfully maudlin (like any good old country song)."  The two are enhanced on mandolin and vocals by Roger's son, Berklee College of Music student JD, who--in the time-honored tradition of musical consanguinity complements his father's style perfectly--and by veteran bassist Eric Levenson, formerly with Joe Val and the New England Bluegrass Boys and later with Boston City Limits.

This program is being sponsored with funds from The Friends of the Russell Library, and is free of charge.

Ribbon-Cutting for Phil Salafia Canoe and Kayak Launch -- Friday, June 5 at 3 p.m.

Mayor Daniel T. Drew invites members of the public to a ribbon-cutting celebration for the new Phil Salafia Canoe and Kayak Launch on Friday, June 5, at 3 p.m. at 181 Johnson Street in Middletown. The launch area is adjacent to the City’s Recycling Center and provides kayakers and canoeists easy access to the Coginchaug and Mattabesset Rivers and the spectacular 1000 acre freshwater tidal marshland and wildlife habitat where these rivers converge. Ample parking is available at the launch itself or at the nearby Remington Building.

The opening of this launch marks an important milestone of a project initiated in 2006 by the Jonah Center for Earth and Art and completed by the Coginchaug River Access Group; the Department of Planning, Conservation and Development; the Department of Public Works; and the Mayor’s office. Construction of the concrete ramp into the water was performed by Munger Construction in October 2014, funded primarily by a $50,000 Federal Transportation grant managed by the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection’s Recreational Trails Program. The ramp leading into the water is made of interlocking cement pavers connected by steel cables and laid on 18″ of gravel. Even at low water levels, the ramp extends well into the river channel, providing a flat, solid bottom for paddlers to launch canoes, kayaks, or any car-top or hand-towed vessel. Vehicles with trailers are not allowed to drive on the slope to the river or on the ramp surface.

Middletown’s Common Council chose to name the facility the Phil Salafia Canoe and Kayak Launch in recognition of the contributions to our community by Phil Salafia, Sr., former member of the Common Council (1954-61) and co-founder of the City’s first Parks Commission (1958). The City purchased the “Salafia property” — 20 acres of open space along the Coginchaug River upstream from the new boat launch —from the family of Phil Salafia, Jr. in 2007.

The public is invited to bring their kayaks and canoes to the ribbon-cutting and to launch into the Coginchaug River immediately after the ceremony. For more information on this event or on the boat launch itself, contact Michiel Wackers, Director of Planning, Conservation, and Development at 860-638-4840, or John Hall of the Jonah Center at 860-398-3771.

Tonight and This Weekend at The Buttonwood Tree

Be in a TV Commercial!
The Downtown Business District is sponsoring four commercials to be filmed in downtown Middletown and aired on Channel 3 WFSB to show how vibrant, eclectic, and exciting our city is.

They will be filming one of them at The Buttonwood Tree, Wednesday, June 3rd from approximately 5:30-6:00 PM. They would like to show our performance space as it is during a concert, so we will hold a concert! We have two performers coming to sing and play guitar – Karen Stein and Jimmy King, their duo is called “Just Friends”. We invite you for some refreshments, friendly entertainment, and the chance to be “on air” in our commercial!
Walk-ins are welcome but, if you can let us know that you will be here that would be even better!

Cat Tales ~ Cat of the Week ~ RYAN

Cat Tales ~ Cat of the Week

RYAN

Gender:  Male
Breed:  Domestic Short Hair
Color:  Silver Tabby
Age:  8 years old

Hello!  My name is Ryan.  I am one of the sweetest boys you'll ever meet! I was found injured as a stray. My leg was bitten by a large dog. Even though I was in so much pain, I was happy to be rescued and cared for by Cat Tales.  I walk with a slight limp, but I'm completely healed and ready for my forever home!  I am FIV+ but please don't worry, humans cannot catch this.  Also, it's extremely hard for other cats or animals to catch. We'd have to get in a fight and exchange blood but I am not a fighter, I'm a lover.  I am not a sickly cat - FIV does not make me sick. I can live just as long as any cat without FIV and I can live a relatively normal life without any symptoms at all.  I would only need to visit my Vet twice a year (or how often my Vet advises).  I purr when you pet me and absolutely love attention.  I am a very friendly and affectionate cat. I would do best in a quiet home without dogs or children so I don't have to share you!  Please come to meet me and you'll see how sweet I really am.  I think you'd fall in love with me and want to adopt me on the spot!

No Dogs / No Children
