Common Council to Revisit Country Club Road Property Giveaway on Monday, June 6

Dear Champions of Government Integrity in Middletown,

Since I posted information in the Eye on the Common Council’s May 2, 2022 vote (8:4) to sell 35 acres of City-owned open space to Middletown Youth Soccer for $1, your response to this giveaway has been heartening. Many residents have contacted the Mayor, members of the Council, and the City’s general counsel to point out what is terribly wrong with this deal.

The Conservation and Agriculture Commission scheduled a special meeting and sent a strongly worded letter to the Mayor and the Council.

The Committee on Economic Development determined that Ordinance 13-21, adopted in May of last year, had not been complied with. This ordinance mandates the procedure to be followed when City-owned land is sold. The Committee submitted a resolution asking the Council to rescind the sale.

On May 17 the Mayor wrote to all those who had shared their objections to the sale with him, and posted his account of the facts, as he understood them, on Facebook. He postponed the signing of the deed of sale that had originally been scheduled for May 18.

We need an impressive turnout, in person and on WebEx, at tomorrow’s meeting of the Common Council. Whether you speak or just listen, your presence will make a difference! We must demand a widely publicized open meeting, with all the parties represented, where residents can ask questions and receive honest answers. This meeting should take place either before residents become distracted by summer plans, or early in the fall.

The Council meeting starts Monday evening at 7:00, preceded by the special meeting at 6 at which members of Council can question directors of City departments. You can attend either in person, in the Council Chambers, or on WebEx. The Council agenda and instructions for joining remotely can be found on the City Web site. Just click on the above links.

Sincerely,

Krishna Winston
