The Mayor basically has a line-item veto on the budget, including the veto of reductions. The Council cut the Mayor’s budget by eliminating the Environmental Specialist and Arts Coordinator positions, plus some other spending reductions. But the Mayor by his letter rejected the cuts and restored the expense items to the budget that were outlined in his letter.
The Council has 10 days (until May 27) to override his veto and restore the cuts. They need a 2/3 majority to override. If they don’t override the vetoed items, the mayor’s veto stands and the expense lines are restored. As long as 5 Council members vote "no" on a veto override, the Mayor's restored line items will stand.
An explanation from the council as to why these positions aren't necessary would be helpful. Has that been posted somewhere for review? An arts coordinator at 90k seems quite excessive on the surface. Does that 90k include massive benefits? If it doesn't the full baked in price of that new role will be closer to 130 or 140k is my guess given the insurance programs and retirement programs.

At least, this is how I understand the situation.
