Starbucks Proposes Drive-Thru On Washington

On the agenda for Zoning Board of Appeals Thursday meeting.

PUBLIC HEARING
1. Proposed variance to Section 44.08.12A (1) with regard to length of drive-thru from the required 200’ to 160’ for a new restaurant (Starbucks) located at 871 Washington Street. Applicant/agent Middletown Washington LLC/Richard Carella ZBA2016-1.

The site is the location of a defunct Computer Tune and Lube, in front of the Home Depot.

The zoning code requires a 200' approach to a drive-in, to allow a certain number of vehicles to "stack" before reaching the window. A similar variance was granted to Taco Bell, located on the same lot.

The ZBA meeting is Thursday, 5:30PM, in Council Chambers, the application is the subject of a public hearing.

If the variance for Starbucks is granted, the applicant would then need to apply for a special exception permit, to allow a drive-thru. This application would be heard by the Planning and Zoning Commission.

  1. I know some will be against this, but I am all for it especially in Home Depot plaza

  2. If granted - the entire entrance to the plaza should be re-worked. The right turn has an insufficient amount of room if another vehicle (especially a work truck) is waiting to cross over to exit the plaza.

  3. This would be a very positive move for Middletown.

  4. Ditto on reworking the entrance... Aside from the fact that people stop where there isn't a stop sign, and stopped traffic pulling out in front of moving cars who don't need to stop, it needs more distance from 66 to the side entrances.

I don't seek out Starbucks, but this is the perfect place for this type of establishment. I hope it works out!

  5. Looks a whole lot safer and more sane than what they made Dunkin Donuts do on South Main St!

  6. I wish Patch had sent this out earlier so I could have attended the meeting at P&Z.

  9. This would be a fabulous move for Middletown. Starbucks is a neighborhood gathering establishment with awesome company ethics. This is a great location for this type of business.
