On Saturday December 19th, South District Firefighters’ Local
#3918 will be teaming up with Westfield Fire, the Middletown Police Department,
& Middletown Elks’ Lodge #771 to bring joy to needy families throughout the
City of Middletown. The program was created 22 years ago by a Middletown police
officer and South District firefighter after responding to a home two days
before Christmas, to find a family in great hardship, with no gifts or
Christmas tree. After taking up a collection from their co-workers, they delivered
a tree and presents to the family. South District Firefighters & Middletown
Police have been involved since its inception, but the program has grown into
an annual event that raises funds throughout the year to help pay for useful
items for families undergoing hardships. To date, this program helped close to
90 families during their times of need, and thanks to the efforts of dozens of
local businesses and community organizations.
This year the event will be hosted by
the Middletown Elks’ Lodge #771 from 5pm-9pm. The “adopted” families will
receive gifts from Santa and enjoy a hot meal, dancing and other festivities
that are sponsored by emergency personnel, local businesses, and members of the
community. For information on how you can donate to the program, contact the
Adopt-A-Family committee members Nick Fischer or Geoff DeFrancesco at the South
Fire District, (860)347-6661.
