Jim Matus and Larry Derdeyn
July 10 @ 8:00 am - 10:00 pm
Jim Matus and Larry Derdeyn are a pair of experimental jazz
musicians who perform together in the band Nested Drift. Their music
finds an intersection of classical jazz and rock and drives it all the
way home. Smooth grooves, firm beats, and soaring instrumentals made
Nested Drift an instant favorite when they performed with us in June.
The Buttonwood is therefore ecstatic to welcome these two musicians back
for a double billing of their own solo performances.
Jim Matus – solo laoutar
Larry Derdeyn – solo piano
You can hear their work with the band Nested Drift on Sound Cloud
And don't forget to reserve your seats on our website.
Sissy Castrogiovanni – Unplugged Trio
July 11 @ 8:00 pm - 10:00 pm | $10
Jazz, Mediterranean and World Music, with a touch of classical and African influences, all blended into Sicilian lyrics, rhythms and old folk traditions. Sissy Castrogiovanni comes to The Buttonwood with her Unplugged Trio!
Sissy Castrogiovanni – voice, compositions
Jussi Reijonen – classic guitar, oud
Jorge Perez-Albela – drums, percussion
With her powerful and warm voice, Sissy Castrogiovanni has a unique and soulful sound. Jazz harmonies, Mediterranean and Sicilian roots, African rhythms and a touch of classical music, all combined together to support beautiful original melodies in Sicilian dialect.
Pure fire on stage. Sissy’s stunning energy comes as much from her home as it does her unique spirit. Born in Sicily (Italy) into a musical family, Sissy is firmly planted between the Mediterranean Sea and Volcano Etna in an island with a long history of foreign domination, from the Greeks to the Romans, from the Arabs to the Spanish, from the African to the Normans. The result is a mixed culture where every single domination left something to see, to taste, to hear.
It is said that music does not lie in the notes themselves but between them, and it is exactly in that space where Boston-based Finnish fretless/fretted guitarist and oudist Jussi Reijonen‘s music thrives and blossoms.
In both his original compositions and his playing, the open spaces and
silences of Scandinavia effortlessly rub shoulders with the maqamat of the Arab world and the rhythmic richness of India and West Africa, creating a truly enchanting musical mosaic.
Born in Lima, Peru, Jorge Pérez-Albela
began playing drums at age 16. He comes from a strong lineage of
musicians and educators; The Purizaga family from his mother’s side and
The Merino family from his father’s side. His great-grandfather was
educator Don Isidoro Purizaga and his uncle was drummer/ composer Rafael
“Pocho” Purizaga.
His versatility, deep knowledge of jazz and South American rhythms, and
his ability to integrate jazz drums with cajón make him a one-of-a-kind
musician.
As always, don't forget to reserve your seats at our website
Artist’s Reception for Jennifer Misseri
July 12 @ 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm
Come and appreciate the work of photographer Jennifer Misseri. The Artist’s Reception will be on July 12 from 5-7 pm.
Jennifer L. Misseri is an emerging artist in central Connecticut. Art has been her lifelong passion and has become her chosen career path. Her enthusiasm for art knows no bounds and has led her to establish a business focused on photography. Striving to create a connection between the viewer and her pieces, Misseri often takes photographs using a macro lens, which engages the audience by bringing them closer to the subject. This aspiration of audience engagement has led to an exceptional perspective that is evident in the elegant images that beautifully capture the world around us.
Jennifer describes herself as “an emerging local artist chasing a dream.”
When speaking about her work, Jennifer says, “I’ve come to realize photography is more than just a career. It’s a way of life, a way to look at our world. Through my years of photographing everything in my environment I have come to discover the beauty of small details as well as understand the importance of the big picture”
You can view more of her work on her professional Facebook page: Jennifer Leigh Photography
