Wild Jazz at The Buttonwood Tree With International Trio: Nilsson-Fonda-Nilsson

Saturday night at The Buttonwood Tree Performing Arts & Cultural Center, with creative genius will fill the air as Jazz music.  The concert starts at 8 pm, and as always, nobody is turned away for lack of funds. Refreshments are available, and people congenial. Come listen, relax, drift away ...

This inter-generational trio naturally blends European and American influences and the result is a wide range of guitar trio music with a red thread, ranging from fragile acoustic poetics to bombastic electrifying grooves, from a whisper to a scream.

This band teams American bassist Joe Fonda with two Swedish brothers – Anders and Peter Nilsson.

A little history:
Anders and Peter have been developing a kinship playing together since they first started playing as kids in Sweden. During the past 10 years they have worked in Aorta, with 3 acclaimed albums to date. Anders moved to New York in 2000 and Joe Fonda was the bassist at his very first session in the city, initial sparks flew! Peter and Joe have also played together in NYC in the past with guitarist Raoul Björkenheim, who introduced them.

Nilsson/Fonda/Nilsson was formed in 2011. The collaborative concept was to include compositions by each member, showcasing the different styles of the individuals, and the trio chemistry was just right!

The Buttonwood Tree is at 605 Main Street, Middletown

“Very judicious with his own instrument, the guitarist has a superb ear for mood and environment, using space and silence primarily to create atmosphere but also to prevent the instrumentalists from merely blowing in customary fashion.” – Jason Bivins/Cadence Magazine (US)

Joe Fonda is a composer, bassist, recording artist, interdisciplinary performer, producer and educator. An accomplished international Jazz artist, Fonda has performed with his own ensembles throughout the United States, Canada, Europe and Asia. He has collaborated and performed with such artists as Anthony Braxton, Archie Shepp, Ken McIntyre, Lou Donaldson, Bill and Kenny Barron, Leo Smith, Perry Robinson, Dave Douglas, Curtis Fuller, Bill Dixon, Han Bennink, Bobby Naughton, Xu Fengia, Randy Weston, Gebhard Ullmann, Carla Bley, Carlo Zingaro, Barry Altschul, Billy Bang. As a composer, Fonda has been the recipient of numerous grants and commissions From Meet the Composer New York and the New England Foundation on the Arts. He has released twelve recordings under his own name.

”There is more to creative mastership than the surface of satisfaction and political certainty. The music of Joe Fonda is part of a living tradition of belief and dedication. Future historians will be surprised at the breadth of Mr. Fonda’s offerings. This is a real virtuoso and composer of the highest order.” Anthony Braxton, 1996

Peter Nilsson has established himself as one of the most in-demand drummers in Sweden. His varied and organic playing can be heard in many constellations, including Plunge, The Opposite, Loïc Dequidt Trio/Quartet, lim, Cennet Jönsson Quartet, Anders Nilsson’s AORTA, Cecilia Persson Quintet, Ola Hedén Trio and 15,5. Among many others, he has also worked with artists such as Paul Bley, Miroslav Vitous, David Liebman, Marc Ducret, Bobo Stenson, Marilyn Mazur, Palle Danielsson, Perry Robinson, Michael Formanek, Tony Malaby, Mark Helias, Juhani Aaltonen, Lotte Anker, Eugene Chadbourne, Raoul Björkenheim, Tim Hagans, Lennart Åberg, Joakim Milder, Sten Sandell and Tolvan Big Band. Peter is featured on over 30 albums and has toured extensively in Europe, as well as in Argentina, Azerbajdzjan, Mexico and the USA.

”Nilsson’s drumming is broad and creative, working his instrument often like a percussionist would, adding accents, creating musical effects rather than rhythm and pulse.”
