From fuel economy to zero emissions, the benefits of electric cars are helping turn more and more car owners into electric vehicle (EV) owners. To help Connecticut residents and businesses better understand EVs, the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) is sponsoring the EVConnecticut Expo on July 9 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at MxCC (Chapman Hall, 100 Training Hill Rd., Middletown). The event, which is free and open to the public, includes a look at some of the newest and most exciting EVs from every major manufacturer, new charging equipment, along with a presentation by Connecticut DEEP Commissioner Dan Esty and Connecticut Transportation Commissioner Jim Redeker.
According to DEEP, the EVConnecticut program is “preparing Connecticut for a rapid and seamless integration of electric vehicles into the market by providing resources and information to owners of EVs and by expanding the availability of EV charging stations.” The state is working to have 200 public electric vehicle charging stations open in Connecticut by the fall of 2013 to help ease concerns about EVs running out of power, and to help increase EV sales.
“Since cars and other types of transportation consume about one-third of Connecticut’s energy use, it makes sense to learn more about electric vehicles which are more fuel efficient and less harmful to the environment,” said Dr. Anna Wasescha, president of MxCC. “We are glad to bring this EVConnecticut Expo to our campus to showcase these cars, give people an opportunity to understand how they work, learn about charging stations, and talk to experts and other owners.”
EVConnecticut is a partnership between the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection and the Connecticut Department of Transportation. Its goals are to provide useful tools for electric vehicle owners, and to be a resource for businesses and municipalities that are interested in installing electric vehicle charging infrastructure.
