Relay For Life Set For Saturday

The Greater Middletown Relay For Life Committee had their final meeting prior to the upcoming event. The Relay 2013 shirts were unveiled and distributed to the 2013 Committee and Team Captains. The Committee has spent numerous hours in organization and preparation for the Greater Middletown Relay For Life that will be held on Saturday, June 1 starting at noon continuing through noon on Sunday June 2 at Woodrow Wilson Middle School Track.

There are currently 34 teams with over 520 registered participants. The Greater Middletown Relay includes participants from Middletown, Cromwell, Portland, East Hampton, Middlefield, Durham and Rockfall. Relay is an overnight event full of entertainment, activities, and moving ceremonies to Celebrate Cancer Survivors, Remember loved ones lost, and Fight Back against cancer.

Relay for Life is community driven, it is a great way for our community to work together in the fight against cancer. Teams of people, including local businesses, friends, families, hospitals, religious organizations and clubs gather to take turns walking laps. One of the main events is the Survivors’ lap, which kicks off the event. Each cancer survivor completes the first lap around the track before being joined by other participants. It reminds us why we participate in Relay. After nightfall it is time for the luminaria ceremony. Thousands of luminaria lit bags are dedicated to loved ones line the track and are left burning throughout the night to remind participants of the incredible importance of their contributions. Each luminaria represents a loved one.

Every dollar raised goes toward fighting cancer. Contributions to Relay For Life help the American Cancer Society fight cancer in four main ways: research, education, advocacy, and patient services.
