Feet to the Fire Commissions by Sam Long ’12 (Mar. 31) & Ethan Cohen ’13 (Apr. 14-22)

Sewon Kang '14 talks about student commissioned works by Sam Long '12 (March 31) and Ethan Cohen ’13 (April 14-22) in this entry from the Creative Campus blog.

The Center for the Arts Creative Campus Initiative is proud to present two student commissioned works that address the ever-growing challenge of environmentalism in exciting new blends of art and science. These student commissions are part of Feet to the Fire programming, a major undertaking on Wesleyan’s campus to examine critical environmental issues through art and science.

At 2pm on Saturday, March 31, 2012 in Memorial Chapel, Sam Long ’12 will perform his senior thesis project, which combines environmental studies and music in a special collaborative performance inspired by the Connecticut River, one of Middletown’s most spectacular local resources. The performers call themselves The Honey and the Sting and will play all original music on a stage powered by students on bicycle energy generators. Celebrating what the earth provides without contributing negatively to the problem, such a performance has never been attempted at Wesleyan before.

Scoreboard is an installation by Ethan Cohen ’13 that brings together the romanticized American image and the aesthetic of energy efficiency. It replicates the “home” score, an isolated section of the standard football scoreboard, first using traditional incandescent light bulbs. This ideal is then contrasted with a version of the same board that utilizes more energy-efficient fluorescent light bulbs. The comparison of the two nearly identical boards side by side challenges viewers to decide for themselves whether or not the soul of an object can be retained in energy efficient form. Scoreboard will be installed in the Science Library during Wesleyan’s Earth Week Celebration - Saturday, April 14 through Sunday, April 22, 2012.

Rushford Center to Offer Nutrition Program

RUSHFORD OFFERS FREE NURTURING PROGRAM FOR FAMILIES

MIDDLETOWN, CT__ Rushford will offer a FREE 8-week Nurturing Program for parents of school age children ages 4-11 and their families. Sessions begin Monday, March 26th and meet weekly from 6:00 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. at Macdonough Elementary School, 66 Spring Street, Middletown. Light meals and refreshments will be provided.

The goal of the Nurturing Program is to improve a family’s quality of life by promoting a philosophy of caring for self, others and the environment. Rushford encourages families to attend the sessions, which will include separate parent and children’s groups to promote wellness.

Parents will share experiences to develop parenting skills and address positive life options through acceptance and support. Children will have their own safe and trusting program environment to build self-esteem and confidence, express feelings through communication, engage in family activities, and learn techniques for cooperation and conflict resolution.
Program outcomes include better parenting, improved knowledge of child development and an increased use of appropriate parenting techniques. Family Enrichment Programs, such as Rushford’s Nurturing Program, increase the odds that children from extremely high risk families are nurtured appropriately and go to school ready to learn.

Rushford is dedicated to offering prevention programs rooted in positive youth development principles. In total, more than 10,000 individuals and families use Rushford’s resources and services each year.

The Nurturing Program is made possible through a grant from the State of Connecticut Children’s Trust Fund. REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED. To register, or for more information, please contact Felicia Goodwine-Vaughters at 860-852-1080 at Rushford Prevention Services in Middletown.

Rushford is dedicated to meeting the substance abuse and mental health needs of children, adults and families. Working cooperatively with our Hartford Healthcare network partners and others who share our goals, Rushford strives to provide affordable, accessible services of proven effectiveness and high quality that embrace the most current research in prevention, treatment and recovery. Sermon: Irrepressible. Holy Week starts. Jesus rides into Jerusalem, on his way to a cross. People shout praises, the temple authorities don’t like it, suggest that Jesus should tell his disciples to be quiet. He replies, If they were silent right now, the very stones would cry out. Whatever is happening in this week of mystery and pain, death and life, however God is working now, it is irrepressible. Not even human incomprehension will keep it from emerging. Or, rising.

Church School: Arrive early for fellowship and to carry our colorful banners in front of our church this Palm Sunday!  K-5 ~ Palm Sunday – Communion/Special Music.
