I woke up with a few questions:
Q: How did Seb and Dan do compared with 2 years ago?
A: According to various sources that I googled, in the 2009 election, Mayor Giuliano received 4388 votes, while Dan Drew had 3902. Yesterday, the official tally shows Giuliano with 4317 and Drew with 4959. In other words, Giuliano's base was virtually unchanged, while Drew brought in 27% more votes, accounting for the much higher turnout in this election. [Note to self: Do not ask yourself math questions before having your morning coffee. My earlier draft of this article transposed the numbers in Drew's 2009 votes. He had 3902 votes - not 3092. But I then used the incorrect number to figure the rate of increase, leading me to write that there was 60% rise in votes. Drew did really well in the election...but not THAT well. And thank you to the skeptical anonymous commenter who questioned my figures!]
Q: When does the change take place?
The new elected officials will be sworn in next Tuesday, the 15th.
Q: Who reads the Eye anyway?
It turns out that the Middletown Eye had 1,000 visits between 8 pm and midnight on Tuesday. If you are interested in that sort of thing, you can click on the site meter over on the sidebar. Thanks for the spectacular election night coverage go to my colleagues, Fishmuscle & Ed (who happened to be the second-highest vote-getter in the City!)
Q: Was Chris Bourne a spoiler?
A: Nah. Her vote total was less than the margin of difference between the winners.
Q: Were Wesleyan Students spoilers?
A: Same thing. With a margin of 600 or so votes, Dan is the undisputed new mayor for all of Middletown, not just those liberal out-of-towners up on the hill.
Thanks for all the great coverage before, during and after the election!!!
ReplyDeleteWonderful Job Ed on keeping the updates last night!!!
ReplyDeleteCan you post the vote numbers by "voting districts" so we can see how our and for who neighborhoods voted?
The "Official Results..." post has links in it to the spreadsheets with precinct by precinct and absentee versus machine. It even lets you answer such esoteric questions as:
ReplyDelete"which candidate got the most votes under the Realistic Balance party affiliation, was it Ruth Ann Johnson, Ron Klattenberg, or Ed McKeon?"
I thought that the 2009 race was much closer? The Middletown press report from November 4, 2009 said that the results were 4379 for Giuliano and 3896 for Drew.
ReplyDeleteEven the Press' numbers are correct, your premise is still valid. Giuliano's numbers remained almost unchanged, but Drew's numbers increased substantially. Interesting.
The Eye did a fantastic job last night and today with the reporting. Thank you!!!
Thank you 12:07! I fixed the post.
ReplyDeleteThe influence of the Wesleyan voters is an opinion. The democrats on and off campus specifically targeted these voters right or wrong. Facts are facts. To say they played no role in Drew's election is an inaccurate statement for the Eye. It is sad to see, thru out this election even when the truth was presented everyone still tried to cover it up. Differing from the liberal view point or that of the democratic town committee in this town is clearly subject to persecution and denial of that is part of the discrimination.
