Mayor Asks P & Z To Lead Riverfront Planning

Mayor Giuliano has asked the Planning and Zoning Commission to take the lead in a new planning initiative for Middletown's riverfront. In a letter to its chair, Quentin Phipps, Giuliano wrote:
I would like the Planning and Zoning Commission and the Harbor Improvement Agency to work together to investigate riverfront development and specifically to:
•Review the results of the riverfront planning workshop [held over 10 years ago] and the Harbor Management plan;
•Seek an update from the DOT on the Route 9 southern interchange project and the bridge lighting project;
•Seek an update from the Water and Sewer Department on the status of the sewage plant relocation;
•Gain an understanding of the ramifications of having the OMO superfund site within our riverfront development area; and
•Meet with Lady Katherine Cruise lines, the Lions Club, the Parks and Recreation Department, and the new operator of the Harbor Park Restaurant to understand the issues at Harbor Park and the best way to connect the riverfront to the downtown and expand the park towards the sewage plant.

Tom Chace, Chair of the Harbor Improvement Agency, was at Wednesday's Planning and Zoning Commission meeting, and he enthusiastically endorsed the Mayor's suggestion. James Sipperly, Environmental Resource Specialist for the Water and Sewer Department, suggested that a subgroup of Planning and Zoning and the Harbor Improvement Agency work on this project.

Chairman Phipps was also enthusiastic about the idea, and he expressed his gratitude to the mayor for giving the lead role in Harbor planning to the Planning and Zoning Commission, "I want to thank him for reaching out to us.". Phipps said he would communicate with Giuliano about how to move forward with planning.

  1. Why is Franks boat still allowed to moor in front of Harbor Park. How much $$$ has he saved over the years that he ran Harbor Park by never having to shell out for a traditional mooring like all other boat owners?

  2. Come on Ed this is the same crap every mayor has pulled when they finaly realize they arent as popular as thier big ego says it is. The planning and zoning department is supposed doing these checks on a regular scheduale since the 1960's. Change rt.9 and put a light, ha ! Dont try re-inventing the wheel, the mayor has a slightly better chance of being re-elected (not much though) !

    While I'm complimented that you think I write everything in the Middletown Eye, if you look carefully you'll notice the piece was written by Stephen Devoto. That said, I'm not sure what you expect the reporter to do other than report the facts, which he has.
