The inevitable happened last night, again. Someone got into one of cars in the driveway and made off with a new coat that was about to be returned to a mail order company.
I woke to find maps and repair receipts strewn next to the car which is not alarmed. We leave that car unlocked to prevent broken windows (we've been broken into before), and we normally don't leave anything in the car.
Unfortunately, we never made it to the Post Office yesterday, and the coat, in the box was left in the car, and the thief made off with it.
Officer Ypes arrived promptly and took the report then asked for a description of the coat in case he saw anyone wearing it while he was patrolling over the next few days.
Because it was new, my wife printed a photo of it from the online catalogue, and Officer Ypes left to take a look around the neighborhood.
He returned a few minutes later coat in hand.
He wasn't sure why the thief would have dropped it. Perhaps spooked by an automatic light he abandoned it because he didn't want to be caught with it. Or, my theory, since the box is still missing, he left with an armful of loot, and the coat slipped out of the box inadvertently.
At any rate, a happy ending to a larceny, and a very pleasant interaction with one of Middletown's hardworking police officers.
BTW, he warned us that there had been a number of car break-ins in downtown neighborhoods lately, and warned us to keep an eye out for suspicious activity, and not to leave valuables in our cars.
My car got broken into on Thurs night/Fri morning. Only thing that was taken was my registration. Well, good luck if they come back for the car since it is at the Ford dealership for a recall and there until early 2011. This was the fourth time since I lived in my apartment that we were broken into. And we are not down town.
ReplyDeleteI guess the thief didn't like the coat either!
