Dedicated neighbors, with Jennifer Saines at the lead, and the Parks and Rec department have worked hard over the past few years to revive McCarthy Park on Hotchkiss Street, one of only a few midtown parks that's not a "green." New tennis and basketball courts. New benches (which have repeatedly been vandalized), and now a new swing-set, installed yesterday.
Can soccer games still be played there?
ReplyDeleteCongratulations to Jennifer Saines and all who worked on this to improve the community!
ReplyDeleteTo answer Linda's question--since the swings are on the side of the park, there is still an active lined playing field. Although there has not been many soccer games recently, the field has been used often for ultimate frisbee and football.
ReplyDeleteThe swings, I believe were ordered by Parks & Rec about a year ago but were only installed this year.
ReplyDeleteBut it's Jennifer Saines and John & Fred Elmore who are the workhorses here, and have been for several years. Michiel Wackers (planning office) found a grant that will make this year's tree planting and benches possible, making the wish list catapult into a reality.
And from what I have seen with my own eyes, we have a great DPW staff working on things, all the poison ivy was pulled up, the trees are going to be taken out of the bleachers section, and the idea of restoring the wooden bleachers is being considered. It is a wonderful thing to see. WIsh we could do this in every city park and every neighborhood.
