The Buttonwood Tree seems to be attracting some awesome musicians these days, and our shows are not only getting better and better, but our audiences are growing. Remember it's easy to make a reservation online through our DONATE button. We hope to make this process easier in the near future, but for now, at least you CAN make a reservation online! It's still also a fine idea to come a bit early to get your seat and mingle, see the art, or enjoy some cake from O'Rourke's Diner.
This weekend we have two exciting shows and a reception for this month's artist, Tony Donovan. Tony has taken some wonderful images of a basketball tournament held on the beautiful grounds of the CT Valley Hospital here in Middletown, called "Hoopfest 2010". Come meet Tony and see these photographs from 3-5pm on Sunday. It's free as all our art openings are.
Friday September 10th we welcome Bill Shaka and The Soul Shakers. This is a lively group who had folks dancing at their show I went to a few months ago. They will go "unplugged" but don't let that fool you - it will be fun, full of energy and (I'm guessing) loud enough. I think this will really stretch our boundaries, as I can't say I've ever heard this type of music here at TBT before. Let's see what you think!
Saturday September 11th we'll have another musician new to Buttonwood, Tony Purrone. He'll play with Preston Murphy and together they'll offer some of the finest jazz improvisations around. They'll also play some standards, so you might recognize some of it. Tony and Preston If you miss this Saturday for some reason, next weekend Joe Fonda will be here - so for you jazz lovers - you've got two chances to hear some incredible music this month.
Friday September 10th at 8 pm, $10 / $8 students - Former New Orleanian and hurricane Katrina flood survivor, Bill Shaka will take you on a heartfelt excursion through the Acadiana prairies and swamplands of south Louisiana and then drop you smack dab in the middle of the sweltering FONK, Big Easy style. Whether he’s Conjuring up images of heartache and betrayal or serving up doses of tongue in cheek humor, Shaka will have you ridin’ shotgun with escapades encountered along the back roads, highways, bayous and byways. Supported by a sympathetic band of groovin’ rooticians THE SOULSHAKERS, Shaka and company are living proof that there is indeed healing power in a brand of music appropriately called A RHYTHM ‘ N‘ ROLL SWAMP SOUL GUMBO.
Saturday September 11th at 8:00pm, $10 - Tony Purrone is known as one of the greatest jazz guitar improvisers of our time! Performing with his remarkable acoustic bassist, the young, and very engaging Preston Murphy, he will play a truly amazing offering of jazz standards and originals. Don’t miss this opportunity to hear him in such an intimate setting!
