Perhaps you've noticed these signs on the parking meters on the South end of Main Street in the past few days.
I figured that the signs said parking was banned during the re-paving of Main Street, since all the spaces were empty in the middle of an otherwise busy day.
When I got close enough to read them, I discovered that parking is only banned after 6 pm, since the roadwork takes place at night. During the day, the meters are apparently free, since the bags cover the coin slots! So don't miss this chance to pick up some fresh produce at the Fruitery, sample the chocolates at Tschudin's or take your Aunt Esther to the Inn for lunch -- all without feeding the meters covered with bags.
Here's the email that Main Street Manager Marie Kalita-Leary sent out about the re-paving project:
Milling* of Main Street will begin on Tuesday September 14th. The work will begin at 8 PM and continue until 6 AM. It is estimated that it will take 3 nights to mill from Union St (South Green) to Washington St.
The paving of Main Street is estimated to begin on September 27. This will also be night work.
The Department of Public Works is working to make this transition as smooth as possible. If there are any problems call Public Works at 860-344-3407.
*What is Milling?
Milling a street is the process of removing a specific amount of asphalt from the street in preparation for installing a new top section of asphalt on the street or an additional section of asphalt called an overlay.
