On July 06, 2010, at approximately 7:27 p.m., the Middletown Police Department responded to a medical call at the Middletown High School for a student that had collapsed from the heat.
On investigation it was determined that the student had been at Football practice that was being held from 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. The two Assistant Football Coaches, Christopher Kelly Ellis, age 26 and Joshua Hamilton, age 29 had been conducting a strength and conditioning session that consisted of weight training and running. The running segment began at approximately 7:10 P.M., consisted of sprinting up a hill several times. Shortly thereafter, one Middletown High School student collapsed. No water had been provided during this training. The approximate temperature at this time was 93 degrees with a heat index of approximately 100 according to the National Weather Service.
The student was transported by ambulance to Middlesex Hospital for evaluation and treatment. The two assistant coaches were each issued a misdemeanor summons for Reckless Endangerment 2nd Degree, Section 53a-64.
Subsequent to his arrest it was disclosed that Joshua Hamilton had an outstanding warrant for his arrest for Failure To Respond to an infraction.
Are these coaches insane??? There is no logical reason to even hold practice in weather like this. Just give the kids a few days to rest. And no providing water??? Glad they got arrested.
ReplyDeletePractice in this weather without water is just stupid. They should have known better with the training and coaching clinics they attend.
ReplyDeleteParents, the AD and the CIAC all should learn a lesson from this. Water or not, there should be strict rules about how hot is too hot to practice outside on a given day. Any parent that knowingly dropped off their child (these ARE children)for an outdoor practice this week should also share in the responsibility.
ReplyDeleteNew developments in this case prove the coaches did provide water. Evidence was captured by a video survelliance tape.
