Mayor Orders Termination of Non-Union, Non-Certified BOE Employees

Based on the contract that the City of Middletown has with Local 466, Mayor Sebastian Giuliano has ordered that all non-certified, non-union employees hired by the Board of Education be terminate immediately and all paychecks issued to non-certified employees must be paid through the City of Middletown and not the Board of Education.

This action is the latest step in an ongoing and escalating controversy between the Mayor's office and the Board of Education, who met Tuesday night in executive session to discuss legal matters raised during the controversy.

The order from the mayor names several specific positions for which the Board of Education hired employees outside of the contract arrived at by collective bargaining with Local 466.  Those positions include a nurse supervisor, a part time Central Office custodian, a part time Adult Education custodian, a part time accounts clerk, a secretary for Parents' Resource Coordinator, a Truancy officer (a position which was terminated by the BOE, and then revived as a non-union position), and several Cafeteria workers ("floaters" who are working approximately 19 hours a week as permanent part time employees without benefits or union representation).
