Tonight March 11:
Poets Kate Rushin and Susan Allison (both with long associations to the Middletown community) will be reading this evening for Manchester Community College's "A Celebration of Women's History Month." The event is part of the series known as "Mishi-Maya-Gat" and not only features the poets but also singer/songwriter Lydia Fortune performing a program titled "Black Women Singers: From Early Roots to Jazz". Ms. Fortune opens the program at 7 p.m. and it takes place in MCC's new Community Commons, Great Path Academy (attached to the Lowe Building). For directions and more information, go to www.mcc.commnet.edu/faculty/spoken.php.
Saturday March 13:
Drummer Bill Logozzo, leader of the Heartbeat Jazz Band, brings the band to Middletown to play a benefit concert to help his long-time friend and trombonist Skip Hughes. For the past decade, Hughes' wife has been battling ovarian cancer and, while she was in the hospital this past December, their house burned to the ground. Thankfully, no one was hurt but they lost all their clothes and other possessions. Logozzo and company will be performing its usual blend of traditional and Dixieland jazz at 3 p.m. in First Church of Christ, 190 Court Street. Joining Logozzo and Hughes will be Fred Vigorito (trumpet), Noel Kaletsky (clarinet, saxophone), Dr. John Clark (saxophone, clarinet), Charlie Freeman (piano), Art Hovey (bass) and guest vocalist Diane Mower. For more information about Logozzo's charitable work and how you can help, go to www.nutmegchrome.com/musicaldreams/ or, for tickets, call 203-250-8881. Tickets will also be available at the door.
