Police Chief Patrick McMahon appeared before the Finance and Governance committee to ask for funds to buy ergonomic chairs for the 24/7 positions at the Police Department reception area. The chairs, designed for hours of sitting, cost approximately $1200 each, and are guaranteed to be able to be used every day, every hour for the next five years.
The request came due to budget constraints imposed on city departments. The Finance and Government committee approved the purchase of two chairs. McMahon indicated that the chairs would prevent claims for back injuries, and said that he'd be back eventually to request three more.
In other business, F&G agreed to move a request for $60,000 in additional funds for improvements at the senior center. The city will be receiving a grant of state and federal dollars amounting to $190,000 for improvements which include partitioning on the second floor, construction of a corridor, and cosmetic improvements. Representatives from the senior center will be requesting the additional $60,000 for additional partitioning on the first floor, improvements in living area and cosmetic improvements. The Common Council will consider the request at their next meeting.
The improvements at the Senior Center will allow additional, simulatneous senior programs and will create an atmosphere that is "less institutional."
