Around Middletown in 80 Days: Day 61
INTERNATIONAL CLIMATE ACTION DAY
Today, as a part of the International Climate Action Day, the Church of the Holy Trinity, First Church and South Church will ring their bells 350 times at 3:50 PM, to represent 350 parts per million of carbon dioxide, the point beyond which life as we know it cannot be sustained. The earth's atmosphere currently holds about 387 parts per million. Phileas could travel via airplane around the world, but as he likes to be conscious of his carbon footprint, he employs more eco-friendly modes of transportation.
The Jonah Center for Earth and Art utilizes an integrated approach in working to restore and preserve ecologically significant areas in Middletown, including the North End Peninsula and the shared wetland area of the Mattabasset and Coginchaug rivers. Beyond protection of natural wildlife habitats, they aim to provide opportunities for outdoor recreation and environmental education as well as expand eco-tourism through eco-friendly landscape design and environmental art.
Visit their informative website for more information on specific projects and how you can get involved. Particularly useful is the Middletown Green Business Initiative.
