In Middletown, from 3:00pm - 4:10pm , Earth Ministry and Jonah Center will be gathered to hear a proclamation signed by the mayor of Middletown recognizing October 24 as the International Day of Climate Action and the participation of Middletown in the event. After the proclamation is read, bells of three downtown churches will toll 350 times, beginning at 3:30 and 3:50 p.m.
According to environmentalist William McKibben, the number 350 is the most important number on earth. It represents the maximum amount of concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, 350 parts per million of C02, that is compatible with the sustainability of life. McKibben adds that the world has already passed that number. The earth’s atmosphere currently holds about 387 parts per million.
