Kleckowski Responds to Democratic Town Chair

From Deborah Kleckowski

I want to take this opportunity to thank all you who have supported me. This article is to address the comments made by the Democratic Chairman Daniel Russo and Anonymous as reported on July 6, 2009.

In response to Dan Russo's comments, "She effectively left the party two years ago. She stopped communicating with the party." That is an inaccurate assessment. I have not "stopped" communicating with the Democratic Town committee. There has not ever been any communication.

The only time there has been communication between me and the Democratic Town Chairman or other members of the party has been when my involvement in the party was "inconvenient" or an apparent threat to the "status quo", which Dan himself promotes as a positive working relationship among party members and the community at large. For example, shortly after the 2009 municipal election Dan Russo asked me to step aside to allow a long time commissioner, who was not re-elected, to resume his position. The reasons were that this person had served for several years and was an asset to the commission, which is true, and, now that I was a mother and had "mother duties" it may be a good time for me to resign. The commissioner in question had NO knowledge of this request. Frankly, there was something very unsettling about "manufacturing" the outcome of an election. This is a very slippery slope of which I wanted no part.

Another example of "party communication" is in reference to the election of the P&Z Chairman. The Democratic Chairman requested a meeting with me. The discussion was about the contentious subject "seated alternates”, which could affect the votes for the Chairman. Many may recall there was a debate as to the interpretation of the language in the City Charter, the P&Z By-Laws and State law as to whether or not "seated alternates" can vote for leadership. Dan Russo contended that "seated alternates" do not have the right to vote for leadership (Chairman, Vice-Chairman and Secretary). In the end I did not agree with Dan's legal interpretation of the By-Laws/Charter. Dan Russo expressed his point of view in front of P&Z that same evening about 1 a.m. However, Dan gave the commission his legal opinion without disclosing his position as the Democratic Town Chair. I had to ask myself the obvious questions, "was Dan interpreting the law/Charter/By-Law on the basis of who held the current majority/leadership", "or was his interpretation void of any political motive at all”? Yes, "seated alternates" can vote for leadership the same as with any other land use matter.

Finally, on April 15th, 2009 I submitted to Dan Russo my letter of intent to run for re-election for P&Z. I received no response. My change of party was not noticed until June 1, 2009. Where was the interest from the party in supporting my re-election bid? Where was the support of the party when I was attempting to ensure leadership was present at meetings? Where was the communication between the party and myself for the past six years?

It is the culmination of all the examples given which has led me to switch parties and to seek office on the Republican slate.

Regarding the statements made by Anonymous, your facts are wrong. I have never been invited to or participated in a Republican caucus.

We reside in an interconnected community with the unique problem of having many qualified people interested in serving in an elected capacity. It is time to open the "business as usual" gates and to give others the opportunity and privilege to serve their community. Just because "things are working" does not mean things are working well or that things could be working better! Status quo does not mean working to full potential it means there is no movement-it is just stagnant. I believe Middletown residents have more potential then "status quo" and more importantly, residents of Middletown deserve more than the "status quo'!

Thank you to Anonymous regarding "protecting the old guard". I agree that the community has undergone a transformation with hundreds of new people choosing to live here! I encourage people to become involved locally. Your opinion does count. Your presence is needed and appreciated by many people already involved in the community. There is no limit to the opportunity to work to better our community. Change is no longer on the horizon horizon; Change is now here!

  2. If you care about Middletown, and you wish to become active in local politics, Middletown's Republican Party is willing to listen and welcome you.

It is in that spirit that we are very pleased that Deborah Kleckowski has chosen to apply as a candidate on the Republican Party slate for this November's Election.

  3. There is a generation transformation occurring right before our EYES and it is working torward the development of building a stronger community.
Anonymous 10:18 you are way out of line on your assessment of Ms. Kleckowski,"she is not an unsuccessful", she is in fact a very successful lifelong resident of the City who has been educated within the City Schools.
Her family although not very well know have deep roots and share much with the community.
I have know Deborah for the better part of my life and know her intentions are in the best interest of the constituents, she has been invovled in political activity all the way back to our school days. She has earned her right to be heard and respected, for you to insinuate that there are jealousies of the "S" family from others that dedicate their time to the communtiy is just plain wrong.
I happen to be related to the "S" family and also have a great deal of respect for both brothers who have dedicated the better part of their lives to the community through both education and politics, remember this is time away from home and not always well received by those sitting at home.
Although I may not always agree with their ways and or decisions made, I will always show respect for both and debate my opinion in the proper forumn.
This family has earned respect over time and deserves it, the community is also entitiled to their right to debate and challenge and should do so.
We are seeing a lot of destruction within the Democratic party and the next generation sees ways around that and is willing to step up and take charge, they should be applauded for their efforts.
Was it not our Democratic leader President Obama who has touted CHANGE! "well with that said", then I refer back to my past comments in another post that you know your candidate and not be a party line voter, there is much to be gained by both sides,"not to mention the taxpayers", when we work together.
    Best wishes Deb!!!

  4. Way to go Deborah. It was not so long ago that the powers to be of the Democratic Party promoted change. In 1997 Mr. Russo stood side by side with organized labor, hard working middle class families and the minority community to affect change in the Democratic leadership by campaigning against a person who did not share his ideals or the fundamental principles of the Democratic Party. It was okay to "buck" the system then but it is not okay now if someone dares to speak against leadership? Since when did being a democrat mean you have to fall into lockstep and isn't it truly hypocritical to fault a person for doing the very same thing that was done in the past... by many. To say that I am disappointed is an understatement. Deborah wanted to speak her mind as an individual who wants the best from the community. If the Democratic Party doesn't want an independent, strong willed female in their ranks then so be it but I for one will remember this in November. Good luck Deborah and don't change.

  5. What is the blind devotion some people have for Councilman ("S") Serra? When he was beaten in a Democratic primary election by then unknown Maria Holzberg back in the day, he wanted the entire Democratic party to turn their back on her, and assist him in running as an independent against her and the Republican Mayoral candidate. At that time, present Democratic Town Chairman Daniel Russo was one of those individuals who endorsed what Mr. Serra wanted to do. For over a decade, Mr. Serra held a vendetta against anyone he thought did not support him in his (lack of effort)re-elected bid as Mayor. Mr. Russo was right there with him.
For Democratic Town Chairman Daniel Russo to now say anything negatively about what Ms. Kleckowski is doing, is nothing but hypocritical and wrong. At least she has the deciency to tell you she is leaving a party that will not support her. Today's democrats are not the same party they were a couple or more decades ago. The old democrats would never had let their party get so out of touch with the public, and so full of themselves,as they now are.
Come this November, we need an entirely new Republican Council and Board of Education majority representation. This town needs a change.
