No Humdrum Drumming

Ever since I heard the Taiko drum performance at last year's Wesleyan commencement, I anxiously awaited another opportunity to hear Wes Taiko group perform.

Sunday night in a packed World Music Hall on the campus, the introductory and advanced Taiko class, led by Mark H. Rooney gave an hour-long astonishing demonstration of Japanese drum song in many of its forms.

Even the introductory class played with skill, precision, power and passion. Photos and recordings do not do justice to the feeling of the air vibrating against your chest as these accomplished drummers drill a precise and artful tattoo on your eardrums and thrum the walls of your chest cavity.
