Ray Townes shows history collection

When I was attending Tuesday night's Board of Education meeting, I heard Keigwin Middle School Principal Tracey Koff invite the public to view an exhibit on African American history at her school.

Ray Townes, who was the longtime building superintendent at Keigwin, is displaying his extensive collection of black history posters and memorabilia in Keigwin's lobby. My husband took my kids to see it today.

They got a tour from Briana Bellamy, a "Cougars in Action" Keigwin student who led them through the display showcasing the history of African Americans from the colonial period to the present day. They learned that Garrett Morgan invented the first traffic light signal and they wrote their wishes on the Martin Luther King, Jr. message board.

To see Mr. Townes display, stop by during regular school hours in February (next week they will be closed for winter vacation). For more information, call Keigwin school at (860) 632-2433.
