Public Service Announcement from Guy Russo, Water and Sewer Department

SOLICITATION OF WATER LINE PROTECTION PROGRAM
BY AMERICAN WATER RESOURCES

The City of Middletown Water and Sewer Department has recently been made aware of a solicitation mailing by American Water Resources for homeowners to obtain a protection plan for repairing broken water lines on their property. Many Water & Sewer customers have been contacting the Department believing these solicitations were coming from the Water & Sewer Department. The Water and Sewer Department would like customers to understand that this is an independent direct marketing effort, and the Middletown Water and Sewer Department does not recommend, or endorse, this or any other such product for homeowner pipe protection.

A check with the Secretary of State indicates the business is licensed with the State of Connecticut to provide this coverage, since 2004. The Department urges customers to compare shop any such offer.  Homeowners are responsible for only the water lines and sewer lines that run directly from the main lines to their house, these pipes are referred to as laterals. While these laterals are subject to failure from normal wear and tear it is usually the result of an actual incident that will cause the pipe to rupture.

As with any and all decisions to purchase insurance or similar products, or retaining contractors, please exercise caution, get references, and always get more than one quote. If you have any questions, as always please contact the Water and Sewer Department at 860-343-8085.
